Senior Couples Support

The Senior Couples become family away from home and provide great support and enjoyment to one another. Some Saturdays we take short trips and see nature's beauties together.  Other times we get together for dinners out or a movie, pot lucks and a game night. Barkers and Ensigns are office couples we see the most, but we see the Dances, Hursts, Owens, Turnbows and Hoopes for senior outings, transfers and Zone Conferences.  All of the seniors add dimension and charm to the mission experiences.  We have grown to love them all.

Barkers took us to visit Oak Mountain last October to enjoy the beautiful Fall colors. It was so peaceful with breath taking beauties.
There was an area for horses, boarding and an arena, as well as another area where cabins were for rent.  The main attraction was a developed swimming area on the lake with sandy beaches, huge restrooms/changing area made from stone.
At the end of our visit, we found a nature preserve for birds, with a hospital having rows of display cages.  It was amazing to see the beautiful owls up close.

We took Barkers to see the Sylacauga Stone Quarry, Blue Bell Ice Cream Factory ($1.00- 2 scoop servings) and then a tour of Helen Keller's School for the Blind in Talledega.( Principle Ware spent over an hour with us and was so gracious) Then Loyds (Sylacauga first Counselor and R.S. President)  had us drive to their place and they led us up to Mount Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama.(Creek Indian name for high point, 2,407 ft above sea level) We took a driving tour of campgrounds, rock paths and enjoyed a wonderful lunch together overlooking the cliffs to the valley below. (200 workers of Roosevelt's CCC constructed over 6 years, the road, resort Inn stone buildings, paths, cabins, pavilions and restaurant opening in 1936. The timber and stones were harvested from the mountaintop)

One of our apartment maintenance men, Clyde, was so quick about getting things fixed.  I complimented him one day and he replied, "Well, I do my best and pray over the rest!"(We laughed) The more I thought about it, the more I appreciated his mantra that was similar to the serenity prayer.
