Strong Senior Couples
Elder and Sister Morrison have served almost eighteen months and are getting ready to go on a country visiting tour towards Farmington, UT, where they live, in three weeks. They have been amazing hard workers in support of all the young missionaries and are great fun to be around.
Morrisons have lived all over the world during their married life following Elder Morrison's work assignments. (One time they had to live apart for ten years.) He worked on the original GPS systems used for surveying land, was employed negotiated military contracts in Saudi Arabia and even arranged a marriage for a Prince!! Sister Morrison said women are not allowed to drive in Saudi and you have to get your husband to take you everywhere!! She had to have her clothes taylor made and their furniture custom built because that is the only way to obtain what you need!!
Elder Morrison works in the mission as the "Car Zar" and has some great stories. One was about a foreign elder who received a speeding ticket. It is the missionary's responsibility to pay any speeding tickets, so when the notices kept coming to the mission office, Elder Morrison would jump the Elder and tell him to pay it. Each time the Elder would tell him, "I don't have any money!" Tired of hearing this excuse, Elder Morrison joked, "So get a job!" A while later, President Sainsbury called the missionary to give him an assignment and the Elder said, "I can't do it, I'm working at McDonalds." President said, "What?? Why are you working?" The Elder replied, "Elder Morrison told me to get a job to pay my parking ticket!" When President asked Elder Morrison if he told the Elder to get a job, Elder Morrison replied, "I don't think so!" President said, The Elder said you told him to get a job!" Elder Morrison laughed and said, "Oh, I was just joking!"(It turns out the foreign Elder did not understand the underlying humor in English conversation and took Elder M literally!) President Sainsbury told Elder Morrison, "You can't tell them to get a job! They don't understand our subtle humor."
Another car experience was a sweet Sister missionary who parked in a handicapped spot during a rain storm at night and received a ticket. She didn't even see the sign marker on the side of the road. Elder Morrison coached her and they had to go to court twice over it. The judge said the fine was $500.00!! Elder Morrison showed the judge photos of really nicely painted handicapped parking spots and pleaded this would be a hardship for the full time missionary to pay. The judge replied, "If I parked in a handicapped spot I would have to pay $500.00!" The judge reduced the fine to $100.00!! Elder Morrison quiped as he related the story, "The Judge was not at all impressed with my great pictures(well painted parking spots) I took!"
Sister Morrison has served in the mission office ordering supplies, making up the missionary bedding bundles, preparing dinners for the MLC(missionary leadership conference) each month and organizing Senior outings. She transports and inspects cars with her husband during Zone Conferences. Sister Morrison wrote two historical novel books about her family's genealogy and she gifted one to me that I am really enjoying reading. Her first book "Finding Emily" is on my read list. She told me they have a family dinner she has to host for 120 people the day after they arrive home and four days after that she has to be ready for family Christmas!! Sister Barfuss has really enjoyed talking about our great missionaries, projects, quilts, books and family with Sister Morrison. She is a lot of fun to visit with about her world travels and life experiences.
Sister Morrison was assigned to write the Children's Sacrament Meeting Program with only two children in their Branch. She worked really hard and found a grandmother that could bring her three grands to help and two children from another ward. The day of the program the Grandma didn't show up with her three grands and Sister Morrison was sweating bullets worrying about how to pull the program off. Just after the Sacrament when the program started, in walked the three grands with Grandma and the program went so well, everyone stood up and clapped!!!(in the Chapel!!) The branch members were so proud of these children and Elder and Sister Morrison brought a prepared lunch for everyone to enjoy afterward. It was nothing short of a miracle how the program came together when no one had practiced their parts etc.
Elder and Sister Morrison bore their departing testimonies at all the Zone Conferences and all of it was well done and very touching. Elder Morrison makes the missionaries laugh and he related how much he has loved serving with the missionaries, doing all the work to keep the cars going. As part of his car presentation, he reviewed No No's and wrote on the board, "No Nose." and had everyone in stitches!!
Sister Morrison told a story about her beautiful dog getting lost on a hike with her husband and nephew, where he had no dog tags on him that day. The cherished pure breed dog ran off when the sounds of target practice pierced his ears, never to be found. Their family was so sad about loosing their great pet they had brought over from Saudi Arabia. A few days later, Sister Morrison heard a noise at the door and when she opened it, there were bloody footprints all over the door step and her dog was hiding, ashamed around the corner for making a mess!! She rejoiced in his ability to find his way home from miles and miles away, at the expense of wearing out his paws!! She likened her dog story to the missionaries who have put so much work in their missions and their strong love for the Savior will lead them to their heavenly home!!
