Senior Couple Field trip to Moundville, Indian Archaeological Park, Univerisity of AL-Oct. 5, 2017
Indian story telling and performances went on all day
Elder Morrison drove the mission van with Sister Morrison, Elder and Sister Tuck and Elder and Sister Barfuss a little over an hour away to Moundville. We picked up Sister Richetto at her home and met Elder and sister Jones and Elder and Sister Sullivan part way there. We all begin listening to Indian legends and split up to look at the art and craft booths, nature hikes and reading all the plaques by the ruins. There was an amazing museum with life size dioramas and art a facts from the digs. Steve hiked 74 steps up to the Chief's house.
Steve and Rosie finding some of the only shade on a great gravel path through the woods. It is only safe to walk on developed paths, as two copper head snakes were found in the grass yesterday and thrown back into the woods!!
There was an old elevated boardwalk that was in ruins next to the path. The Indians built their home on earthen mounds to protect them from river flood waters. The Chief's home was on the largest mound. Political, religious and regular life were all practiced as one way of communal life.
Steve swapped hunting stories and talked about wild turkeys
The paramedics were combing the trails for injured school kids because there were several buses brought in for the festivities. Several areas just off the trail have severe cliffs that could be disastrous for innocent children wandering off! An older Indian women had a heart attack yesterday while working her booth and she had to be transported, but sadly didn't make it.
These two paramedics were combing the trails for injured kids. They told us about cliffs and water moccasins and to stay safe.
