MTC beginning

Our son, Bryce flew into Salt Lake City from his Guatemala 10 day Dental Mission to help see Steve and Rosie off to the MTC (Missionary Training Center) in Provo, UT. He rented a car and followed us to the gate and took some photos.  Definite role reversal from 22 years ago when we dropped him off and Blair three weeks before him.

Missionaries helped us with our luggage and lead us to our dorm room.  Steve and I attended orientation with Elder Breathwaite on “Preach My Gospel.” Steve met Ron Bowman who graduated with Steve from Capital High over 45 years ago and will be serving with his wife in South Korea/North Korea border with military personnel!!   Elder Hafen is a grand nephew of the temple artist that painted murals with John B. Fairbanks. We enjoyed cafeteria lunch, more classes and dinner.  Steve was chosen to be a district leader of 8 people. Our district has Elder and Sister Thackery who are serving in Trinadad as Financial Support(he dated Steve’s cousin Julie Barfuss who is now serving in Russia with her husband). Elder and Sister Phillips who will be serving in London ENG as Self Reliance, Elder and Sister Smith; who will be serving in Sao Palo, Brazil (He is a brother to Jim Smith in our old ward) and us.

Monday night was a special rebroadcast of Elder Bednar’s talk on “The Character of Christ” (Putting off the Natural Man) It was a powerful address we both enjoyed about being more like the Savior.

Sept 12--Tuesday Evening Devotional-Presidency of the Seventy, Patrick Kearon(trials and MTC experience) and his wife, (spoke on prayer). Rosie sang in the choir of over 400 people in the MTC Choir, an arrangement of “Nearer My God to Thee” and it was a powerful spiritual experience to sing with so many. It was also wonderful to sing hymns, primary songs and prelude hymns with such a large group.  The choir director was hilarious and also bore a powerful testimony of overcoming trials through enduring faith, during the rehearsal.  
  "But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God."  Alma 17:3

Zone Conferences and Missionary Miracles

      Five Zone Conferences in Birmingham, Inverness, Mongomery, Tupelo and Huntsville happening over the next eight days.  Elder and Sister Barfuss enjoyed the Birmingham Zone Conference and were spiritually fed.       Missionary miracles shared by the young missionaries is always one of the favorite parts of the training.      Two Elders had a Sunday afternoon appointment cancellation and after consulting their area book, biked up and down tough hills to deliver a Book of Mormon to an investigator.  She had a dream the night before that her Book of Mormon would arrive and it happened!!  They were able to set up appointments to teach her and were excited about the opportunity!!      A "ministering angel" brother asked the missionaries to visit a less active family 10 miles away!  The Elders were only allowed 9 miles a day to keep within their mileage allotment after figuring in all the other meetings and service they had to drive to. Powerful Repentance Letter

And as we come to know God, we come to love God, to put him first in our lives and to seek His approval. One of His greatest gifts to us is the gift of repentance. The ability to repent and to be forgiven is one of God's greatest manifestations of love for us. And our willingness to repent is one of our greatest manifestations of love for God. How blessed we are to have the gift of repentance, to be able to joyfully repent every day of our shortcomings and mistakes and to be washed clean in the blood of the Lamb. However, repentance is not something to be taken lightly. To tap into the atonement and the forgiveness it brings requires a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Zone Conference with Elder Klebingat

Instead of 5 Zone Conferences, we had two(Inverness and Gardendale) with Elder Klebingat.  President Sainsbury picked him up at the airport Wednesday night, took him to dinner and to his hotel.  I enjoyed sitting at his table and finding out he and his wife have three children and he served his mission in Colorado, but grew up in Germany.  He was a Mission President and a Stake President in the past.  He instructed President and Sister Sainsbury on the car rides to and from Tupelo's Stake Conference and had a very open and matter of fact style.      President Ballard assigns President Klebingat and delegates to him the Apolstolic keys to function.  He said, "The Lord does not waste time, He has high expectations and is focused. The Lord loves you and when we don't talk about things or address issues it is a selfish thing to protect ourselves.  We lack courage and say, "I was afraid to hurt feelings!"
